Because Schweigen does not manufacture recirculating rangehoods, all installations require external venting. This means we need to consider:

• Motor Type – Whether an on-board or off-board motor is more suitable for your space (and if off-board is even possible).

• Ducting Path – How and where ducting can be run for optimal performance and compliance.

• Clearances & Space – Ensuring adequate room for installation without compromising your kitchen’s design.

Schweigen’s Silent motors are off-board motors — installed away from the kitchen (on the roof, an external wall, or in the ceiling space). By moving the motor outside, noise inside the kitchen is dramatically reduced while still delivering powerful extraction.

Non-silent motors are on-board motors — built directly into the rangehood unit above your cooktop. They’re simpler to install and often more cost-effective, but produce more audible noise during operation since the motor is inside the kitchen.

In short:

• Silent Motor = Off-Board Motor → Quieter operation, motor installed externally.

• Non-Silent Motor = On-Board Motor → Louder operation, motor built into the hood.

While non-silent (on-board) motors do emit noise, they are still very quiet compared to many other brands. Schweigen designs its on-board motors with advanced engineering and quality components to keep operating noise to a minimum — even at higher speeds.

You can expect a gentle hum rather than an intrusive roar, allowing normal conversation in the kitchen while cooking. However, if ultra-quiet performance is a priority, Schweigen’s Silent (off-board) motor systems are the best choice, as they relocate the motor outside the kitchen entirely.

It is certainly not recommended — and using the wrong ducting can cause serious problems. Schweigen rangehoods, particularly those with off-board (silent) motors, require the correct type and size of ducting to operate safely and efficiently.

Improper ducting can lead to:

• Collapse of the ducting under the strong suction created by an off-board (silent) motor.

• Reduced airflow, which impacts extraction performance.

• Increased noise due to turbulence inside the duct.

• Potential motor damage over time.

Silent (off-board) motors should be positioned around 4–6 metres from the rangehood unit for optimal silence and suction efficiency. They can be mounted either on a roof or on an external wall.

Important: For wall installations, the motor should not be placed directly behind the internal rangehood unit, as this can increase noise and reduce performance.

The earlier you involve us, the smoother and more efficient your installation will be.

New Builds

For new builds, we typically require two site visits:

1. First Visit – Pre-Plaster Ducting Installation
   We install the ducting before plaster is completed. This ensures the ducting is hidden, optimally routed, and avoids the need for costly adjustments later.

2. Second Visit – Fit-Off & Commissioning
   Once the kitchen is complete, we return to install the rangehood, connect the ducting, and commission the system for peak performance.

Renovations

For renovations, the process is similar and ideally follows the same two-stage approach:

1. First Stage – Early Ducting Installation
   Where possible, ducting should be installed before cabinetry and wall finishes are complete to ensure a neat and effective setup.

2. Second Stage – Fit-Off & Commissioning
   Once the kitchen is ready, we install the rangehood, connect the ducting, and test everything to ensure it meets performance expectations.
