Benefits of Induction Cooking

Induction is quickly becoming the preferred choice for Melbourne kitchens. Here's why so many homeowners are making the switch.

Faster Heating

Because induction heats cookware directly through electromagnetic energy, it boils water significantly faster than gas or ceramic.

Safer Kitchen

As a result, the cooktop surface stays cool except where the pan sits, which reduces burn risk for families with children.

Precise Temperature Control

Furthermore, induction gives you instant, responsive heat adjustments that are perfect for simmering, searing, and everything in between.

No Gas Required

In addition, switching to induction eliminates gas supply charges and removes combustion from your kitchen entirely.

Easy to Clean

Moreover, the flat glass surface wipes clean in seconds, with no grates, no burner caps, and no baked-on spills.

Energy Efficient

Finally, induction transfers up to 90% of energy directly to the pan, compared to around 40% for gas, so you use less power overall.

7 Things to Know Before Switching

Before converting from gas to induction, there are some important electrical and installation requirements. Here's what you should know.

1

Gas Disconnection

A gas fitter must first decommission your existing gas cooktop before the electrician can begin. Because this is included in our service, you don't need to arrange it separately.

2

Switchboard Capacity

Induction cooktops draw more power than gas. Therefore, we assess your switchboard from a clear photo. If needed, our team will quote and upgrade your switchboard on the day.

3

Dedicated Electrical Circuit

Gas to induction conversions require a new dedicated electrical circuit. However, if you're replacing an existing electric cooktop, the current circuit may be reused, and we'll assess and wire on install day.

4

Cooktop Isolation Switch

By regulation, an isolation switch must be within 2 metres of the cooktop and not inside cabinetry. As a result, our team quotes, supplies, installs, and connects it to the dedicated circuit.

5

Safety Switch at the Board

Your switchboard must also have a compliant safety switch. An upgrade may be required during the gas to induction conversion, and we can quote after seeing a clear photo of your switchboard.

6

Rangehood Clearance

You should allow at least 600mm between your induction surface and the lowest point of the rangehood, as per manufacturer installation guidelines.

7

Benchtop Cutout

If your new induction cooktop is a different size to your old one, the benchtop cutout may need to be modified. We have WorkSafe-approved professionals who can cut and expand the opening, even through caesarstone.

How Induction Installation Works

From enquiry to cooking on your new induction, we handle everything. Here's how the process works.

1

Get a Quote

First, send us your switchboard photo and cooktop details. We then assess your setup and provide a clear, no-obligation quote covering all electrical work.

2

Book Your Install

Next, once you approve the quote, we schedule a convenient installation date. Our gas fitter and electrician arrive together to complete everything in one visit.

3

Installation Day

Finally, we handle any gas decommissioning, run or reuse the circuit, install the isolation switch, connect your new induction cooktop, and remove the old appliance. Your kitchen is ready to cook.

Two Installation Paths

Your circuit needs depend on what you're replacing. There are two scenarios.

Option A

Electric or Induction to Induction

When you're replacing an existing electric or induction cooktop, we can often reuse your current circuit, as long as it's compliant and undamaged. We check it on the day before connecting your new cooktop.

Option B

Gas to Induction

Switching from gas nearly always needs a new dedicated circuit run to the switchboard. Our gas fitter also isolates and decommissions the old gas line before the electrician connects your induction cooktop.

Induction Cooktop Rebates & Incentives

We don't set or hand out rebates ourselves. However, Victorian households switching from a gas cooktop to an approved induction cooktop may qualify for a discount through the state government's Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program. Tick the boxes below to check your eligibility.

VEU Induction Cooktop Discount

Victorian Energy Upgrades (State Government)
Up to $140

The Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program has offered a discount on approved induction cooktops since October 2024. The saving comes from a Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificate (VEEC), which a government-accredited provider passes on to you, either as an upfront discount or as a cash-back after you buy.

The indicative $140 figure is based on a certificate price of $70 and moves with the certificate market. It applies per eligible cooktop, and is separate to anything Addison Appliances charges for the electrical and gas disconnection installation work.

Am I Eligible?

Tick each statement that's true for you, based on the current VEU eligibility criteria.

Tick the boxes above to see whether you're likely eligible.

Renting? Private rental properties are eligible too. We'd recommend coordinating with your landlord or property manager before booking.

1

Built-In or Freestanding Only

The cooktop must be either built into your benchtop or part of a freestanding induction stove. Portable or plug-in benchtop units don't qualify.

2

Electric Only, 3+ Zones

It must run on electricity only, measure at least 550mm wide and 380mm deep, and have 3 or more cooking zones with individual controls.

3

On the Approved Product List

Only specific brands and models qualify for the discount. We recommend confirming a product's eligibility with a VEU accredited provider before you buy.

4

Minimum 2-Year Warranty

The cooktop must come with at least a 2-year manufacturer's warranty to be eligible for the VEU discount.

How the Discount Gets to You

1

Confirm the Product

Check your chosen induction cooktop is on the approved product list, ideally with a VEU accredited provider, before you buy it.

2

Buy and Keep Your Invoice

Buy the eligible cooktop from your chosen retailer and keep the invoice. You'll need it to claim the discount.

3

Contact an Accredited Provider

A VEU accredited provider manages the paperwork and processes your discount once they have your invoice and a recent gas bill.

Where Addison Appliances Fits In

  • We handle your installation, including gas disconnection, the dedicated circuit, and any switchboard work
  • The VEU discount itself is processed separately, by a government-accredited provider, not by Addison Appliances
  • We're happy to point you toward an accredited provider so you can check eligibility before you buy
  • Either way, our team can book in your gas-to-induction installation once your cooktop is sorted
Enquire About Installation

Beyond the VEU discount, switching from gas also removes your gas supply charge altogether, which adds up to real ongoing savings on top of whatever discount you receive.

Eligibility criteria and the indicative $140 discount are based on current Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program guidelines published at energy.vic.gov.au, correct as at September 2026. The discount is a market-based certificate value and can change without notice. Only VEU accredited providers can confirm eligibility and process a discount, and Addison Appliances isn't currently listed as a VEU accredited provider for induction cooktops. Speak with an accredited provider to confirm exactly what you're entitled to before you buy.

Frequently Asked questions

No. Induction cooktops require a dedicated electrical circuit wired directly from your switchboard. A standard powerpoint does not provide enough capacity to safely run an induction cooktop.

Induction uses electromagnetic fields to heat the pan directly, while ceramic radiates heat from an element beneath the glass.

As a result, induction is significantly faster, safer (the surface stays cool where there’s no pan), and more energy-efficient.

Yes — if you’re converting from gas. A gas fitter must decommission your existing gas cooktop before the electrician can begin.

Because our team includes both, we handle the full conversion in a single visit.

Send us a clear photo of your switchboard and we’ll assess it for you.

If an upgrade is needed, we’ll include it in your quote so there are no surprises on installation day.

By regulation, every hardwired induction cooktop requires an isolation switch within 2 metres of the appliance.

It cannot be inside cabinetry. Our team quotes, supplies, installs, and connects it as part of the installation.

It can be simpler. If you already have a dedicated circuit and isolation switch for your ceramic cooktop, the existing wiring may be reused.

We’ll assess this during the quoting process.

Yes. We can remove and dispose of your old gas or electric cooktop as part of the installation service.

We just don’t take the new product packaging.

It is always better to speak with our team first because getting a cooktop too small for the cutout can mean returning the product for a different model.

If your new induction cooktop is larger than your old one, we can assist as an additional service.

We have WorkSafe-approved professionals who can cut and expand the opening — even through caesarstone.

We do not cut porcelain.

Yes. Induction cooktops only work with magnetic-based cookware such as cast iron and most stainless steel.

A simple test: if a magnet sticks to the base of the pan, it will work on induction.

These days, induction compatible cookware is readily available and priced competitively.

Most gas-to-induction conversions are completed within half a day.

Straightforward electric-to-induction swaps can often be done in a couple of hours.

Switchboard upgrades, complex or long new circuits or benchtop cutout modifications may extend the timeframe.
