      Gas Cooking Appliance installations

Gas cooking is remains a popular choice amongst many Victorians.
Gas cooking is still used by a large segment of the population regardless of the growing adoption of induction cooking technology and challenges posed against gas by the State Government.
Many of our customers cherish cooking on gas and tell us it is simply what they are familiar with.
It is a common misconception that gas cooking has been outlawed all together in Victoria, however there are regulatory compliance considerations when looking at installing a gas cooking appliance. To learn more about gas cooking in your home contact our team today.

I heard gas was banned, is this true?

No. Gas has not been completely banned in Victoria.

The Victorian State government has not necessarily our right banned the installation of gas appliances but they certainly are working on moving Victorians off of gas. As of January 1st 2024 gas connections are no longer permitted on new builds. This means that new construction projects will no longer be built with the gas piping infrastructure to connect gas appliances in the home.

What does this mean for you?

Well if you already have gas connected appliances in your home there are no restrictions in regards to connecting new appliances to these existing services. This also applies to renovations to homes with existing gas services. As long as the installation of the new appliances to the existing gas services meets the present day legal installation requirements the installations will be permitted.

I want to install a gas and electric powered appliance. Can Addison assist me with both trades?

Yes, we do this all the time.

It is not uncommon for our team to receive a call from a client who needs our assistance with an installation as the company they originally hired had not arrived with the trades required to get the job done.

As an appliance installation specialist, Addison Appliance are equiped with specific knowledge and the trade professionals required to get all types of appliance installations completed efficiently.

For jobs that require both gas and electrical connections (such as dual fuel free standing ovens or gas & induction combination cooktops) Addison will organise the plumbing team as well as the electrical team to arrive on the same day.

What if the new appliance does not fit into my stone bench top cut out?

We have WorkSafe approved professionals available to safely and efficiently cut all stone bench tops to suit your new appliance.

      What is “change over” quoting?

When Addison supply a client with a “change over” quote the assumption is made that the new appliance will first of all fit within the allocated cabinet/bench cut out and that it will not require alterations to the bench top or related cabinetry.

The second assumption of a “change over” quote is the expectation that the existing services (think gas line and maybe a power point) will be adequate to connect the new appliance to, and that these services will already be legally compliant.

Please see below for the three most common compliance issues in regards to changing over old gas cooking appliances with new gas cooking appliances.

      1. The existing gas supply line must not be leaking.

      2. Adequate clearance is required from the cooktop to the rangehood.

      3. The gas supply feed must be installed as per regulation.
(installed with appropriate materials, by required configuration and may require a shut off valve).

      What is “change over” quoting?

      Continued...

In instances when appliances don’t fit in the desired location or when existing services are not already adequate or compliant this can lead to requiring additional work to to resolve the issue.

Addison can quote to rectify any such issue that a client may face when changing over their appliance.
We even include pricing estimate details in the terms of the quotes provided to clients.

Addison are required to follow the same compliance requirements as any other Victorian installer however unlike some companies the Addison team will go above an beyond to communicate to their clients the potential for any such issues in advance.
It is Addison policy to be forth coming about potential extra work requirements even when it is thought to be unlikely that any such extra work could even be required.

Put simply, Addison staff will always warn you of the worst case scenario in the interest of being transparent with customers.

While most jobs go smoothly without the need for any additional work or alterations to cabinets/bench tops in the event that such work is required Addison can offer solutions.

Do I really need to comply with all these regulation requirements?

Addison installers follow all regulatory requirements to ensure you maintain your product warranty and remain fully covered by your home insurer.

      Clearance Requirements.

      The requirement:
When changing over to a new gas cooktop or a new rangehood there must be a distance of at least 650mm of space from the burner of the cooktop to the lowest point of the rangehood.
Complying with this legal requirement can sometimes be an issue as it is not uncommon to find rangehoods in many Australian homes sitting at around 600mm-630mm above the burners of the gas cooktop.

If the installation of the new rangehood or new gas cooktop does not allow for the regulated clearance requirements it may be best to reinstall your rangehood to sit that little bit higher than before. The Addison team can in most instances quote to undertake this work if required.

Why would my original installer have installed my old appliances too low in the first place?

It is likely that at the time of the original installation your installer(s) was following the regulations that applied at the time and it is only now that the 650mm minimum clearance from burner to rangehood rule applies.

      Clearance Requirements.

      Continued...

I do not have 650mm of clearance how can I ensure my new installation is compliant?

      1. You may opt to have Addison quote for the work required to slightly raise the height of the rangehood. This may require minor cabinet alteration work.

2.If you are only require a little bit of extra clearance you may choose to buy an appliance like the one pictured in the image to the right. As you can see the burners are recessed lower, essentially sitting the burners flush with the bench height. This may gain an extra 20mm to 30mm or so of clearance and in some cases may be enough to achieve legal clearance.

      3. You may choose to convert to induction cooking and ditch gas cooking altogether. As induction cooking only requires 600mm of clearance from the cooking surface to the rangehood above this can often solve the clearance issue experienced by some of our customers. This may only sound like a clearance requirement  difference of 50mm compared to that of gas cooking but when you consider that the 650mm gas clearance requirement is measure from the burner (which typically sits 20-35mm higher than the bench) this can actually make a significant difference in the overall clearance required. Many Victorians are choosing to switch to induction cooking in order to avoid modifying their rangehood height and in some cases altering the above cabinetry to do so.
